Silk is used in rugs for its lustrous sheen and the extremely fine detail it allows — because silk fibers are much thinner than wool, a silk or silk-blend rug can carry a much higher knot density and finer pattern resolution in the same space.
Why it matters to a buyer
Pure silk rugs are a premium, display-piece category, typically lower-traffic by design. Far more common in wholesale programs is a wool-and-silk blend, where silk is used as a highlight — picking out a motif or adding sheen to specific areas of the pattern — while wool carries the bulk of the pile for durability.
