Rug sizes follow a set of traditional dimensions, mostly because handlooms have always been built around them. Knowing the common sizes helps buyers pick correctly and helps retailers stock the right range. Sizes below are nominal. Handmade rugs vary by a few centimetres.
Standard Rug Sizes Chart
- 2 x 3 ft (about 60 x 90 cm): doormat, entry, bath or small accent.
- 3 x 5 ft (about 90 x 150 cm): entry, beside a bed, in front of a sink.
- 4 x 6 ft (about 120 x 180 cm): small seating corner, home office, kitchen.
- 5 x 8 ft (about 150 x 240 cm): small living room, bedroom, or under a small dining table.
- 6 x 9 ft (about 180 x 270 cm): the most common mid-size. Medium living rooms, bedrooms.
- 8 x 10 ft (about 240 x 300 cm): standard living room, a 6-seat dining table.
- 9 x 12 ft (about 270 x 365 cm): large living room, open-plan, large bedroom.
- 10 x 14 ft (about 300 x 425 cm): very large rooms and open spaces.
Runners
Runners are long and narrow, typically 2.5 ft wide. Common lengths are 6, 8, 10 and 12 ft (about 75 cm wide and 180 to 365 cm long). They suit hallways, galley kitchens and stairs. Leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side.
Round, Square and Oval Rugs
Round rugs are sold by diameter: usually 4, 6, 8 and 10 ft. They work well under a round dining table or in a reading corner. Square rugs of 6 and 8 ft suit square rooms and sit well under a four-seat table.
Which Size for Which Room?
The rule that matters most is that furniture should sit on the rug, or at least the front legs of it should. Our guide on how to choose the right rug size explains this room by room. Use the table above to find the nearest standard size.
Custom Sizes
Standard sizes are a convenience. Handmade rugs can be made to almost any dimension, and hand-tufted and hand-knotted programs are both sized per order. If your customers need an odd size for an alcove or a long room, tell us the dimensions and we will quote it. You can also find a rug by size in our range.
Selling Tip for Retailers
If you carry only one size, make it 8 x 10. It is the best-selling size for most home markets. Add 5 x 8 and 9 x 12 next, then a runner.
