Braided Jute Rugs: Handwoven, Natural and Built to Last

Braided jute rugs have a warm, earthy look that suits most interiors. They are made from a plant fibre, they are handmade, and they cost less than most wool rugs. They also have limits, and knowing them helps you sell and use them well.

How a Braided Jute Rug Is Made

Jute yarn is twisted into thick ropes, and those ropes are braided into long plaits. The plaits are coiled into a round or oval, or laid side by side for a rectangle, and stitched together by hand or with a stitching machine. Handwoven jute rugs, by contrast, are woven on a loom as a flat fabric. Both are sold as natural braided or handwoven jute, so check which construction you are buying.

Why Jute Works

Where to Use One, and Where Not To

Jute suits living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and covered porches. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens near the sink, and any damp or outdoor space. Jute absorbs water and can mould or discolour. It is also coarser underfoot than wool, so it is a better choice where people walk than where they sit on the floor.
