A flatweave rug is woven on a loom with no pile at all — the pattern is created entirely by the weave of the weft threads over and under the warp, the same way a dhurrie or a kilim is made. With nothing glued or tufted on, the rug is reversible, noticeably lighter than a piled rug of the same size, and lies flatter underfoot.
We weave flatweaves in wool and cotton, from striped dhurries to geometric kilims, made to order in the size, colorway and pattern you specify — not pulled from a fixed run.
Why Choose Us
What Sets Our Flatweave Rugs Apart
Reversible by Design
With no pile or backing, both faces of the rug are usable — doubling the wear life of the piece.
Lightweight & Easy to Ship
Flatweaves pack flatter and weigh less than piled rugs, which keeps freight costs down on bulk orders.
Indoor or Covered Outdoor Use
The tight, flat weave holds up well in high-traffic spaces and covered porches where a piled rug wouldn't.

How It's Made
Flatweave Rugs, Step by Step
Loom Setup
The loom is warped to the finished rug's width, and the pattern is charted out row by row before weaving starts.
Weaving the Weft
Wool or cotton weft yarn is woven over and under the warp by hand, building the pattern directly into the structure — no tufting, no knotting.
Finishing
Edges are secured, loose threads trimmed, and the rug is pressed flat before a final inspection.

Common Questions
FAQs: Flatweave Rugs
What's the difference between a flatweave and a dhurrie?
Dhurrie is a specific regional name for a flatweave rug, usually cotton, traditionally made in India. All dhurries are flatweaves, though not all flatweaves are dhurries — kilims, for example, are flatweaves too, usually in wool.
Are flatweave rugs durable?
Yes — the tight weave holds up well to foot traffic, and because there's no pile to crush or shed, flatweaves often show wear more slowly than a piled rug in the same spot.
Can flatweave rugs be used outdoors?
They work well in covered, dry outdoor spaces like porches. We don't recommend uncovered outdoor use for wool or cotton flatweaves, since they aren't weatherproofed.
What sizes and colors can you make?
Any size and colorway within reason for the pattern — tell us the dimensions and palette and we'll confirm feasibility and lead time.
How should a flatweave rug be cared for?
Vacuum both sides occasionally and flip the rug periodically — since it's reversible, this spreads wear evenly across both faces. Blot spills promptly rather than rubbing them in. See our full care guide.
Can I approve a sample before bulk production?
Yes — we make a sample or strike-off for your sign-off first, and bulk production is checked against it for size, color and finish before it ships.
