A hand-knotted rug is tied one knot at a time on a loom, by hand, with no backing and no shortcuts. Depending on size and knot density, a single rug can take our weavers anywhere from a few weeks to several months to finish. What comes off the loom is a rug where the pattern runs all the way through — front and back identical — built to be walked on for decades.
We've been weaving hand-knotted rugs in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh — India's rug-weaving heartland — since 2003. Every piece is made to order: you choose the size, the colorway and the pattern, and we weave it, rather than picking from a fixed stock run.

How It's Made
Hand Knotted Rugs, Step by Step
Design & Loom Setup
We translate your pattern and colorway into a graph the weaver works from, and warp the loom to the finished rug's width.
Hand-Knotting
Each knot is tied by hand, row by row — knot density and wool quality are checked against your spec as the rug grows.
Wash, Trim & Finish
The finished piece is washed, the pile is hand-trimmed level, and edges are overcast or fringed before a final quality check.

Common Questions
FAQs: Hand Knotted Rugs
How long does a hand-knotted rug take to make?
Most custom hand-knotted rugs take 8–16 weeks to weave, depending on size and knot density, plus finishing and shipping time. We'll confirm an exact timeline against your spec before production starts.
What's the minimum order for hand-knotted rugs?
We work with both single-piece samples and bulk wholesale orders. Tell us your quantities and we'll confirm what's workable for your order.
Can you match a pattern or colorway I already have?
Yes — send a photo, a Pantone reference, or a sample swatch and we'll match it as closely as natural wool dyeing allows.
What's the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted?
Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot-by-knot with no backing and last decades; hand-tufted rugs are made faster with a tufting gun onto a fabric backing. See our full hand-knotted vs. hand-tufted comparison.
How should a hand-knotted rug be cared for?
Regular vacuuming (a beater bar is fine — the pile is knotted through, not glued) and prompt blotting of spills keep it looking its best. Rotate the rug periodically for even wear, and have it professionally washed every few years rather than steam cleaned at home. See our full care guide.
Do you handle export documentation and shipping?
Yes — every order ships with a commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin prepared for your destination country. Shipping terms are confirmed in writing on your quotation.
